One of the most common statistical indicators which quite concisely characterize the
long-term economic development is the
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
. Gross domestic
product expressed in current prices has had quite a progressive development in SR during
most of the monitored period of the economy transformation in Slovakia. International
comparison of the percentage of growth of GDP in Slovak Republic, either to the V4
countries or to European Union member states, usually sounds very favorably for Slovakia.
In 1989 the GDP of Slovakia reached SKK 267 300 mil. and in 2004 it was already SKK
1 325 486 mil. That percentage represents a 496% growth [Chart 2].
According to the previous chart the GDP in current prices during the observed period
increases nominally roughly to 500% when compared to the level in 1989. These same
numbers however, recalculated to base of the year 1989 shows that increase of GDP in real
terms is largely fictitious
