Abstract
The article summarizes essential findings of author’s broader analyses of the process of
socio-economic transformation of contemporary Slovak republic in the framework of the
sustainable development with regard of attaining living standards common in the European
community.
The focus is on levels and trends in domestic production and on the living standards of
Slovak citizens and the correlation of these two parameters. It offers the view on domestic
production confronted with the cumulative inflation, together explaining the paradox of discrepancy
between the high rates of GDP in current prices and the actual stagnation of the overall level of
domestic production during the involved time period. In line with the approach of cumulative
inflation, the article presents key trends quantitatively defining the living standards trends in
between Slovak citizens.
Understanding the trends and the nature of key socio-economic problems and discrepancies
in Slovak Republic is crucial to formulation of balanced strategy of the sustainable development to
tackle the true problems in Slovakia. Most generally, the article explains how in economy with
traditionally high interference of the institution of state, like in this case of Slovak Republic, it is
inevitable that the state appropriately plays its vital role in the process of democratization and
transformation of its system of economy in order to successfully attain higher living standards of
the citizens.
